Interesting facts about the Indonesian language

Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia, which only became official after independence, recognised by Juliana of Holland in 1945. Within its vocabulary we find words borrowed from other languages: Arabic, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, etc. Indonesian is taught in schools, also used in business, politics and the national media because it is spoken by a large part of the population. Itis closely related to Malay, although it has several hundred local languages, and much of the well-educated elderly population knows and speaks Dutch fluently. This language has no official status (hence is not recognised as a second language), although it is used in the legal sphere, where some documents are still written in Dutch.

Batik is the best known Indonesian word and is a traditional textile to which a festivity is dedicated, celebrated on 2 October. In 2009, the batik was recognised by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
